Enjoy a comfortable & special stay in our gorgeous historic home set in the heart of Modbury, in S Devon.
It's a quick walk to all amenities in the village, but set back from the street therefore at the same time offering both privacy and tranquility.
There's a sheltered terrace, in a lovely private garden. The house is recently and tastefully decorated, and we pride ourselves on our comfortable beds & pillows, crisp fresh linen, and generous towels.
Enjoy easy car access to many fabulous local beaches, pretty South Hams towns, Dartmoor National Park and, plenty of rural walks straight from the house as well.
The Space:
At the back of the house, which dates back to Tudor times, we have created for our guests an entirely private and spacious self contained wing which overlooks, and is immediately adjacent to the lovely walled garden.
- The guest wing is attached to the main body of the house but has its own entrance/front door from the garden side, it's own very well equipped kitchen/diner and an elegant and spacious sitting room.
- There are three double bedrooms and altogether we can sleep up to eight people.
On the top floor Bedroom One is a particularly gorgeous and spacious room spanning the full length of the building. It has an ensuite bathroom, and a separate single bed as well as a king size bed, should it be needed for 'family' accommodation.
Please note that due to architectural constraints this bedroom is not accessed via a conventional door, but has a heavy curtain at the bottom of its own staircase, separating it from the lower floor for privacy.
Bedrooms Two and Three are on the first floor below. Bedroom Two is slightly larger with both a double and a single bed once again allowing for extra sleeping space. Bedroom Three has one double bed.
These two bedrooms share a very well appointed bath/shower room.
- TV, WiFi, Hairdryers in all bedrooms.
Offers space, warmth, comfort throughout the year. Perfect for small groups of friends or families.
Lou's family have lived in Chain House since 1960, and in recent years we have restored the house to make it both extremely comfortable and easy to live in, while at the same time retaining all of its original character, features and architectural integrity.
We are normally in residence in the adjacent (front) part of the house, but the two sections have locked doors between them and your privacy is assured.
We are both available and very happy to help and advise where we can.
A Few Additional things to Note:
PARKING - You have access to everything in your house, but be aware we do not have private parking on site. There is some free parking on the street (first come first serve) but there is a very reasonable Pay and Display car park and in "long stay" it also allows you access to car parking in "long stay" carparks in the neighbouring South Hams towns - Kingsbridge, Ivybridge, Totnes, Salcombe and Dartmouth.
OUTSIDE - we have a lovely large terrace with table and dining chairs. There is a Webber charcoal barbecue, and we also have a number of garden sun loungers for your use, which can be found in the garden shed.
PETS:
For an extra daily charge We would allow one well behaved dog but prefer it if he or she could be kept in the downstairs area of the house for protection of the carpets (dog proof gates are fitted and in situ).
Also please be advised, we have a shared garden and we own 1 (very friendly and benign) cocker spaniel named Saba, and our rather magnificent and beautiful black cat, Rafiki.
Therefore if you do wish to bring your dog, please be honest about how used to other animals he or she is, and how well he would interact with our resident pets if/when they came into contact with each other in the shared garden.
THE AREA:
Whether you're planning a visit to Modbury for a particular event, for a relaxing short break in a beautiful area, for a family holiday close to Devon's stunning beaches, or for a more energetic outdoor holiday, Chain House provides the perfect venue for your stay.
There are spectacular walks straight from the house, meandering through the surrounding hills and valleys. Within a short drive the splendours of Devon unfold. 300 miles of coastline, with Modbury itself lying approximately four miles from the nearest beach and the South West Coast Path. A few miles to the North you can visit and enjoy the craggy beauty of Dartmoor National Park. The area is particularly attractive for those who enjoy the outdoors, with a myriad of activities including sailing, surfing, riding, golf, and walking/hiking along the South West Coast Path, on Dartmoor or inland public footpaths.
Culture and history are incredibly rich and diverse in Devon. There are more National Trust properties than any other county, ranging from medieval cottages to the Lutyens' Castle Drogo, the last castle to be built in Britain.
The South Hams has become a gastronomic destination in its own right, with local producers of cheeses, meat, fruit, vegetables and more recently award winning wines at the nearby Calancombe Estate just outside Modbury as well. Many of these feature feature prominently in our shops and local restaurants. Visits to the Farmer's Market in Kingsbridge and the famous Markets in Totnes and Tavistock are also a delight not to be missed.
The wider area also boasts a growing number of Artists and Artisans, and there are regular exhibitions throughout the year. The annual 'Artists Open Studio' - with events taking place during September across Devon - makes for an enjoyable and often fascinating outing.
Getting around:
A car is fairly necessary, but there is a bus service to Plymouth, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, with onward connections to Totnes and Salcombe.
