Set in the historic village of Richards Castle within the picturesque Shropshire countryside, offering guests plenty of opportunities for walks and sightseeing. In the 16th century, the cottage started its life as a simple timber, wattle and daub, thatched property, with a hole in the roof acting as a chimney. Families would sleep in the upper space, using a makeshift ladder, whilst animals would sleep downstairs. During the 17th century, a staircase would have been made, to give better access to the upper floor. The cottage was extended in the 18th century, when a bread oven was installed in the inglenook fireplace. This is what gave the cottage its name Batchcott (bread supplied/cottage). In the 1930s the cottage was further extended to become a ‘proper’ house. It was then modernised in 1978 as a granny annexe.
