Reconnect with nature and revitalise yourself in this magical setting of the henge and stones of Avebury once created around 6,000 years ago. The Swallows Nest is a peaceful, safe retreat to relax, enjoy, write and create, wth a carved oak desk and dedicated writing space in the second room. Also perfect for those walking or cycling along the Ridgeway and in the fabulous Wiltshire countryside. Solo travellers very welcome. Set in an annexe to a converted black barn, with its own entrance through the a bright, glass fronted atrium, the property is furnished with choice antiques and modern furniture with a reading nook set on the landing and a book library. The property looks out into the Atrium on one side where swallows can be seen nesting and raising their babies in the summer. The other side looks out over a garden to farmland and a delightful view of St James' church, Avebury. Private parking for one car included in a designated parking space. Easily accessible by public transport with regular trains to Swindon and then the number 49 bus (a golden bus!) which can drop you off by the Red Lion in Avebury, approximately 10 minutes walk. Please note there is no TV at the property and there is no kitchen. We do have a kettle, a coffee machine, a microwave and toaster and provide coffee, tea and milk and one or two snacks. There is a laundry room here (shared with the owners) which can be made use of. Ideal for anyone wanting a peaceful night's sleep.
Welcome to the Swallows Rest, Avebury! I am a writer (former lawyer) who has recently moved to this magical setting with my husband Tim, a relationship counsellor. We share our home with three very friendly dogs, Pippin, Ziggy and Bentley. We live next door in North Barn so are usually on hand to advise about the area and any queries you may have.
Avebury is an extraordinary place with the largest henge and stone circle in the world, believed now to date to 6,000 years ago. The village is set amongst the stones (ten minutes away) and the stones themselves are easily accessible and touchable. Visitors like to visit the stones themselves, West Kennett Avenue whioch leads to the Sanctuary and West Kennet Long barrow. The ancient pilgrimage path of the Ridgeway (otherwise known as the Chalk path) starts from near here. St James' church Avebury was one of the pilgrims' stopping places and is the most beautiful church which welcomes all. There are wonderful shops in the village, Elements of Avebury and the Henge Shop, plus a village community shop (open every day 10am-4pm) where you can access most provisions, also a bookshop Cobblestones and occasional post office. The National Trust has a cafe here and Avebury Manor (due to reopen in late 2025) and its gardens and the Alexander Keiller museaum are well worth a visit too. Tours of the stones are regulallry provided by the NT.
