Willance House is said to be the oldest remaining house in Richmond, built before 1600. It was the home of Robert Willance, a wealthy draper, who survived a riding accident and subsequent amputation of his leg in 1606 and recovered to become the first mayor of Richmond until his death in 1616. A chalice presented by Robert Willance to the people of Richmond for saving his life is on show in the Green Howard's Museum in the town. The final resting place of Robert Willance is marked in the local churchyard and there is a walk to the monument on the spot where he is said to have ridden over the hillside on the fateful night of his accident. Built around a wooden 'A frame' structure exposed beams and stone walls are still in evidence hinting at the past history of the house. Today we have three en suite rooms in this historic house which have been renovated to provide your complete comfort during your stay. On arrival you can relax in our elegant guest lounge with its exposed beams, floorboards and Georgian fire surround and sample our home baked goodies with a pot of freshly made tea or coffee.
We are both passionate about Willance House. We work tirelessly to create our special experience for our guests. Colin creates all the home baked products, bread, biscuits and fudge and creates a varied selection of breakfast items to tempt you away from the standard full English. Sandra takes great pride in ensuring that when you arrive you are welcomed to a spotless and well stocked room with luxurious Egyptian cotton bed linen and fluffy Egyptian cotton towels and bath sheets. Willance House is not our hobby, it is our life.
Willance House is situated on a cobbled street which originally had a gate through the town walls leading to the French quarter of the town. The massive castle keep is visible from the front door. The castle was constructed in the 13th Century by the Normans and is well worth a visit along with a tour of the Georgian Theatre, One of the only surviving examples of its kind in existence today. The theatre has a varied programme of performances along with its renowned annual pantomime which was recently voted one the best in a national poll. The town has two museums, one celebrating the long history of The Green Howard's Regiment and the other the local history of the town. A short walk away is the majestic ruin of Easby Abbey which was destroyed by Thomas Cromwell and Henry V111 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The adjoining St Agatha's church displays medieval wall drawings. For walkers, Willance House is situated on Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk which attracts people from all over the world. We offer accommodation to cater for all the needs of the weary walker including drying facilities and early breakfasts. The town of Richmond is well worth a visit.
