We are Linda and Erwin Beenaerts-Huysmans, living in the Kempen in Belgium. And have a very nice hostess in Gythio. During a vacation in Greece we arrived in the village of Gythio in Laconia, Peloponnese, and found our dream location, fell in love with the harbor and the peace that people find there. Are now also grandparents and also want our grandchildren to experience Greek life. Also have a chihuahua, named Herbie, this is already 12 years old and does not travel to our house in Gythio. Gythio (Lakonia) Githio is the largest city of "the Mani"; the middle arm of the southern Peloponnese is named after the castle of Mainia. It is located in the Lakonia department. In the north of the city you can see the ruins of the ancient Acropolis and the theater along with traces of Roman buildings. The island of Kranai or Marathonisi, now reunited with Gythio, would be the place where Helena and Paris (the son of the king of Troy) spent their first night after running away from Menelaus. This would have been the reason for the Trojan War. The center of the island is dominated by the Tzannetakis tower. When I visited Gythio I was impressed by the many terraces on the water. The summer evenings are very pleasant here: you can wander around on the boulevard near the harbor or have a drink or eat in the many restaurants.
