Only 8 minutes walk away from the Cinnamon House you will find the village centre of Kritsa lined with traditional cafes, shops and galleries. This picturesque village sits amphitheatrically in the mountains of Lasithi, 11km southwest from Agios Nikolaos. Being one of the oldest villages of Crete and full of charm, Kritsa is a must-visit. To this day it is considered the most important center of weaving art. Visit the church of Panagia Kera just before the Kritsa entrance to see the wonderful 13th century Byzantine frescos, the most beautiful and well-preserved in Crete. The Kritsa Gorge nearby is one of eastern Crete's most enchanting canyons. Flanked by steep cliffs, it follows a riverbed dotted with oak and olive trees and resplendent with spring wildflowers. About 4km north of Kritsa, the 7th century BC Dorian city of Ancient Lato is one of Crete’s few non-Minoan ancient sites. Once a powerful city state, it sprawls over two acropolises in a gorgeous mountain setting overlooking the Gulf of Mirabello.
