We belong to one of the oldest families of the island, in the Libro d’Oro since 1440. Co-owners of the XVth century Antivouniotissa church in the old town, actually museum. The family started visiting Gastouri by the end of the 19th century, attracted by the Achilleion palace, as other Corfiot families did. The owner has lived in Italy working in several EU countries as architect. Now he is established in Corfu and stays at Gastouri following the old family traditions.
You will stay in one of the most attractive sites of the island, where the famous imperial palace was built by the Austrian Emperors, also used by the German Kaiser Wilhelm. Walk 5 minutes from the house and reach the palace, requested to be built by Empress Sissy, dedicated to her beloved mythological hero Achilles. Don’t miss a promenade in the garden of the palace with the famous statues of the nine Muses along the colonnade and Achilles heel wounded by the arrow of Paris, Prince of Troy.
Take enough time to walk along the narrow streets of the traditional village Gastouri, a few minutes walking distance from your villa. Admire the architecture, influenced by the venetians, visit the historic churches of the village, stop at the picturesque bar and buy fresh hot bread from the historic bakery of Hector on the way to Platanos, drink fresh water from the springs where Sissy used to go and meet local people. Ask in the Philharmonic building about performances of the surprising local music band and other events. Do not miss the family managed tavern with local specialties and once a week music and dance. Worthy of a visit are the two handicraft ateliers on the main road, one with ceramic and one with olive wood creations.
Spend time walking in the countryside under centuries old olive trees, go up to the Aghia Kyriaki chapel, on the hill, and do not forget, once you are there, to ring the bells with an insisting rapid rhythm announcing that there is a visitor. From the top of the hill you can admire a breathtaking view of central Corfu.
You can cross rapidly the island reaching all famous beaches and seaside landscapes. But if you wish you can stay nearby the villa, along the Natura 2000 water front with small scale quiet beaches and an interesting biodiverse seaside, area protected for the Poseidonia algae and marine microcosm, that goes from Perama to Benitses, one kilometer distance from your villa.
