Koppány Pines is a peaceful 16+ adults-only nature retreat in the heart of Koppányszántó, Hungary, set directly on the Koppány Valley trail network in southern Transdanubia. Surrounded by the landscapes of Koppányvölgy Nature Park, it’s a place for guests who love being outdoors — woodland walks, slow mornings, wild swimming, and cosy evenings by the fire. Accommodation is set within our lovingly reconfigured 100-year-old Hungarian lodge, restored with care and styled in a traditional Hungarian way with our own relaxed twist. The building has thick loam (mud) walls, an original construction method designed to naturally moderate temperatures in both summer and winter. Each unit is accessed from a central reception hub with tea and coffee facilities and a small seating area. The retreat is designed for switching off. On site you’ll find hygge relaxation areas including The Nook & Fire Kitchen, firepits, a communal BBQ and pizza oven, and a self-serve Honesty Bar. Guests can borrow adult bicycles, explore local walking tracks and vineyard hills (with traditional wine press houses), and enjoy the sweet buzz of the nearby apiary. A private fishing lake is around a 20-minute stroll away (please bring your own equipment). For spa days, there are three thermal spas within a short drive. Food can be added to your stay: Rewild Kitchen breakfast is served daily except Tuesday, and dinner service runs Thursday to Sunday (please book at least 24 hours in advance). We’re also well placed for exploring Lake Balaton (approx. 40 minutes), the wider Koppány Valley, and the South region including Kaposvár and Pécs. Public transport is within walking distance. Budapest is around 2 hours by car, and the nearest train station is Pincehely (about 25 minutes’ drive).

Koppány Pines is hosted by a small, hands-on team who fell in love with this corner of rural Hungary — the quiet lanes, vineyard hills, forest trails and the slower rhythm of village life. We created this retreat as a place for adults to switch off properly: to wake with birdsong, take long walks, swim wild, share simple seasonal food, and end the day beside a fire under big open skies. Restoring the old lodge has been a labour of love. We’ve kept its traditional Hungarian character and added our own cosy twist — creating spaces that feel calm, grounding and deeply connected to the landscape around us. Our hosting style is relaxed and welcoming. We love sharing local knowledge (our favourite trails, swimming spots, markets, and thermal spas), but we also respect that many guests come here for peace, privacy and space. Whether you’re here for adventure, stillness, or a little of both, we’ll help you settle in — and then let the countryside do the rest. Please note: Koppány Pines is a 16+ adults-only retreat, designed to stay quiet, restorative and unhurried. We do accept dogs, no cats as we have two daschunds, but only in the apartment with a one-off fee of 10 euros.

You can stroll to the local hilltop church and take in sweeping valley views, or listen to the soft buzzing of the nearby apiary, where beekeeping is still part of everyday life. And when village festivals arrive, the streets come alive with colour: locals in traditional dress, tables laid with homemade food, and wine poured as if it were sunshine captured in a glass. For walkers, this is a dream setting. We sit directly on the Koppány Valley trail network, where woodland paths and countryside routes begin right at the doorstep. Follow them through nature park landscapes, dappled forest shade and open views that seem to stretch forever. If your idea of bliss is stillness, there’s also a private fishing lake around a 20-minute stroll away — perfect for a picnic, quiet meditation, or simply watching the light change on the water. When you’re ready to soak and unwind, you’ll find thermal spas nearby, including the Tamási Thermal Spa, easily reached for a restorative day out. And for exploring further afield, Lake Balaton is within easy reach for lakeside days, swimming and beach towns — while Kaposvár and Pécs offer markets, culture and café-lined streets.
