The Casa Colonica dates from the late 18th century. It was once a traditional farmhouse, but has become a villa in the Leopoldine style. It comprises an independent half of the villa (formerly dowager apartments), on two floors, with two private entrances, windows giving onto your own gardens and stunning views of the Valdarno. The rooms are large, with wooden beams upstairs (even the bathroom!), and a lovely barrel-vaulted ceiling in the kitchen. Furnished with antiques, original prints (16th-20th centuries), there are two spacious bedrooms (comfy beds and all necessary bed + bath linens), a huge bathroom, two sitting/living rooms, and a large, well-equipped kitchen. The Casa Colonica is a "real" home. This is an ALLERGY SENSITIVE ACCOMMODATION (no pet policy & low allergen interiors).
Your Casa Colonica hosts are both historians of medieval and Renaissance Italy who live on site at Il Poggiolo Tuscany. We have been hosting since 2006, and enjoy having our guests discover the Valdarno, its wonderful food and heritage wines, and especially its lovely people. The "Welcome binder" provides café and restaurant suggestions, suggestions about special places to see that are off the beaten path, and the iteraries of our favorite jaunts (some start right at our doorstep). Please do not hesitate to ask about anything else!
The landscape is divine (don't miss the panoramic walk on the dirt road to Mercatale Valdarno)! The medieval Torre di Galatrona can be seen from the house and is open on weekends (4.5 km walk or scenic drive on dirt roads). Every town in the Valdarno has a charming museum (my favorite is the Museo della Basilica in San Giovanni - a breathtaking Annunciation by Fra Angelico!). The old centers of the towns are charming, there are good restaurants and pizzerie everywhere, and all the major sites are just a day trip away! And if you are tired of driving, take the train in Montevarchi-Terranuova to Florence, Arezzo, Cortona, Assisi, Lucca Pisa, etc....
