Sophie's Moderno is located on the first floor of a building in the heart of the medieval town of Massa Marittima. All our rooms overlook the marvellous bell tower of the cathedral of S. Cerbone, which can easily be reached on foot in just 2 minutes. Our 100 square metre flat with its own entrance is composed of: a small balcony with a view, a large living area with a sofa bed, a spacious bedroom with a double bed, a bright bedroom with two single beds, a kitchen with dining area equipped with table and chairs, a laundry/utility room for guests and a windowed bathroom with toilet, bidet and shower. Sophie's Moderno is located in a building in the heart of the medieval village of Massa Marittima, a medieval jewel of Tuscany known for its Piazza Garibaldi, considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Just a few steps away are buildings dating back to the 13th century: the complex of San Pietro all'Orto, with the Cloister of Sant'Agostino, the Torre del Candeliere and the Sienese Fortress and Piazza Garibaldi. The beauty and harmony of this place will take your breath away: the Cathedral of San Cerbone (the Duomo) overlooks the square diagonally and is surrounded by the Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo del Comune, Loggia del Mercato, central buildings in the life of a city during the communal era. Inside the Cathedral are masterpieces of medieval art, such as the Ark of San Cerbone and the Maestà attributed to Duccio di Boninsegna. Just a few steps away from Piazza Garibaldi, is the Fonte dell'Abbondanza, another attraction for visitors. During a restoration of the fountain in 1999, a fresco came to light depicting the Tree of Abundance: a large tree with 25 penises hanging from it that some women are fighting to collect. The fresco, dated between 1265 and 1335, has been interpreted as a good wish for abundant harvests, the male member being in fact associated with water and thus with life. Another more political-administrative interpretation recognises the fresco as a celebration of Ghibelline good governance.
