The Rainbow Room is emblematic of the city's designer renaissance, in which classic materials blend together beautifully with atmospheric imagination. The Rainbow Room is located in an old neighborhood noted for its evocative architecture. Karasuma-Oike, the city's key subway station where the city's two train lines intersect, is about five minutes' walk. Marutamachi Station is about a 3-minutes' walk, and within a few blocks' stroll are convenience stores and two supermarkets. Nijo Castle, The Imperial Palace Grounds, the Manga Museum, Sanjo-Dori (the Downtown shopping district), and dozens, if not hundreds of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and bars are within an easy ten minute walk (to which I provide an online resource guide and map with gourmet suggestions). Besides the subway, two bus stations traveling to most places of key interest to travelers, are conveniently boarded just a few blocks away at the Imperial Palace and Nijo-Castle. While enjoying the space's tranquility, it's nearly as central as a visitor to Kyoto can be.

We love baseball, cycling, reading, board games, cinema, & making little movies together. I've traveled to around 50 countries, so I know pretty well what a guest wants to experience: something comfortable, quiet, beautiful, a place to rest and contemplate. You've come to the right place. Generally I greet and say farewell to guests if I am in town and not busy with work. Otherwise, as the room is a self-contained unit, I don't usually see you, save coincidental encounters in the street.

Kyoto is a beautiful city and nearly every neighborhood has its own charm, but the Rainbow Room is located between Nijo Castle, the Imperial Palace, and the Manga Museum, on a quiet street just off Downtown. Though there are some (tasteful) modern buildings, many traditional machiyas remain and a quiet stroll around the neighborhood will reveal to the wanderer traditional crafts still at work, as well as unique galleries and lovely gardens for tea. There are many restaurants and cafes in the area, for which I provide a handmade map to help you find your way. The Rainbow Room is great for families since it is less than ten minutes' walk from a major playground/ children's center as well as the Manga Museum. The main north-south subway line (Karasuma) is less than five minutes walk, as are two major bus stops (at Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace) and bicycles are available for rental at the castle as well. Since the space is in Downtown, catching a taxi is quite easy. And I can always call one for you.
