Dary was born in this village, her family house - a traditional Khmer timber building - is just behind our guesthouse, we are fully integrated here. She has been working with visitors to Cambodia for over 15 years, and loves to introduce guests to local Khmer culture. Dary's mother lives with us, she sometimes cooks Khmer food for guests. Dary will show you Rokakandal village, introduce you to some of its inhabitants, and tell you many stories about growing up in this country!

Our house was newly built in 2023 and designed by the owners. We're in the heart of Rokakandal Village, and it's a unique opportunity for guests to see a Khmer Village from close up. The local market is less than 100m away, and is open every day from 06:00 to 12:00. The house is finished to a very high standard with big, comfortable beds, airy rooms with windows, AC in all rooms and spacious warm, modern showers. The carpentry in the house, doors and furniture, was all built by local people from our village. We're less than 2km from Kratie town centre, and directly on the Mekong River. We can arrange for moto hire, trips to see the dolphins, tuk-tuks and onward buses to all parts of Cambodia. Our restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner for guests and non-guests, and our bar is stocked with beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks. The restaurant terrace is a covered, outdoor space, from where you can watch village life go by. We have a pizza oven and build our delicious pizzas from the flour up. We are in the traditional Khmer village of Rokakandal, 2km south of Kratie Town centre. You will experience how most Khmer people outside of towns live and work, very close up! There are many children here, they are always very interested in foreign visitors. There is a local market in front of our house every morning. Our house is directly on the Mekong River. Rokakandal has a timber temple, there are very few of these left in Cambodia. Our neighbours live mainly from farming and from fishing, or both. West of our village is the Mekong river, to the east is farming and rice paddy land that floods every monsoon, making a beautiful and gigantic lake. Flooded and dry, our surroundings are typical landscapes of rural SE Asia in the Mekong flood plain. It's a pity that fewer guests come during the monsoon season as this is the time when Cambodia is at its most attractive: everything is green, children swim in the flooded fields and everyone goes fishing, with rods and with nets. During the dry season the farmers grow melons, pumpkins and rice and we often go to the fields for impromptu picnics and parties. This is a place for slow tourism: the longer people stay, the more they discover the richness of Khmer rural culture. Our neighbours like it when we invite our guests to local events, everyone is warmly welcomed, not just in the guesthouse!
