The story of Nona Lani begins with David and Winona “Nona” Kong, both born and raised on Maui. Long before South Kihei became a popular visitor destination, they envisioned creating a warm, welcoming place where guests could experience the genuine aloha of island living. At that time, there were no hotels, condos, or vacation rentals in the area—only open fields, a few dirt roads, and about 200 residents across all of Kihei. In 1971, they opened their first four cottages; the next four followed in 1973. David oversaw reservations and operations, while Nona transformed the land with her passion for gardening—planting the plumeria, palms, and tropical flowers that still bloom on the property today. David named the cottages “Nona Lani,” meaning “Heavenly Nona,” as a tribute to his wife. Guests who had the chance to meet Nona immediately understood why: her warmth, grace, and embodiment of aloha continue to shape everything we do. Today, the Kong family carries forward this legacy of hospitality.
