The original home which is now the kitchen was most probably built in 1832 for the James Campbell family. Reverend William McElwee built what we now see as the main house in 1859. Reverend McElwee lived in the home throughout the Civil War. The home became known as Stonegate because of the formal entrance for carriages and horses off Main Street.

Margaret and Derek Hutton own and operate Stonegate. They live in the carriage house on the property. They are fully engaged, active members of the Lexington community. Their love of higher education, historical preservation, hospitality, fly-fishing, and hiking drew them to Lexington and the purchase of Stonegate. They are actively restoring Stonegate to the beautiful property she once was, allowing guests to experience a part of history and explore the Virginia outdoors. Derek attended and played lacrosse at Washington and Lee University. Margaret attended and was a classical ballet dancer at Radford University. They both love the great state of Virginia.
