My name is Selma Nel. I married my husband Bennie in 1981 and then move to Matjiesvlei. From the first time I visited Matjiesvlei it was a special place for me. I was a Grade One teacher for 30 years at a rural school in the district of Calitzdorp but stop teaching at the end of 2013. Now the cottages keep me busy and I enjoyed it to share our beautiful valley with people from all over the world.

Matjiesvlei is an unique and beautiful valley in The Little Karoo. Under the Swartberg mountains and with the Gamka River flows through the valley makes it more special. This valley belongs to my husbands family since 1821. We still owns a part of it. Some of the houses are built before 1860. Three of the houses are without electricity but fully equipped. Gas and solar for cooking, refrigeration, lights and hot water. Three houses with electricity and also fully equipped. This old houses are cool in summer and nice and cosy in the winters. All with fireplaces in the houses for our cold winters. Definitively a farm stay with a difference. Every thing you need is there. Your are only 7 kilometers away from the R62 and 13 km away from Calitzdorp but in totally different environment. Nice gravel roads to all the houses. We have hinking trails on the farm and some of them take you into the Swartberg mountains. For the hot summer days there is the Gamka river to swim or go with a canoe. Also fishing for those who likes it. Need a break come to Matjiesvlei. I have also a small museum where the guests can read more about the rich history and info of our valley.

Calitzdorp is our nearest town. In Calitzdorp there are nice restaurants and wine cellars. You can buy some of the best wines here in Calitzdorp. Lots of other activities like horse riding, visit the museum and fruit picking at some of the cellars. Near Calitzdorp is nice places to visit and see. Seweweekspoort, Gamka Poort Dam, Swartberg pass and a visit to Gamkaskloof. Calitzdorp is near Oudsthoorn and there are also lots of places to visit. Near Mossel bay, George and The Gardenroute. Nice for day trips to all of those places.
