The Observatory neighbourhood is a safe, vibrant and trendy suburb whose proximity to the University of Cape Town (UCT) and its medical school in particular, has always made it popular for young professionals. Observatory has long been a vibrant area with numerous restaurants, coffee shops, bars, a hip night life, and many neighbourhood staples. Most restaurants and retail shops are located along Lower Main road with a 95-year-old bottle store, Observatory Liquors, situated in the middle. There is also a shopping complex in St. Peters square, which is located next to Groote Schuur academic hospital as well as a newer complex called Riverlands mall which is 5 minutes away. Observatory also has a soccer hockey stadium below the station which is flanked on one side by Liebeeck Parkway and on the other by Willow Road. In this section of land, there is also a nine-hole golf course housed at the River Club. Observatory is also under the OBSID neighbourhood watch which patrols the area around the clock.
