Nestled on the banks of the Palmiet River and neighbouring the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, our two off-grid, self-catering cottages are perfectly poised for botanical exploration, hiking, mountain biking and swimming in the river… or quite simply relax, unwind and tune in to the naturally healthy rhythm of the wilderness.
Experience a true digital detox and rare private access to the pristine Palmiet River.
Our two riverside cottages, Upstream and Downstream, were sensitively built in timber with the critically endangered Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos ecosystem in mind and with the aim of having as little an impact on the receiving environment as possible. The interiors focus on natural simplicity with a light and fresh finish and a relaxing colour palette which blends seamlessly into the landscape. Amenities and decor elements have been consciously curated for their environmental-ethics as well as supporting local NGOs, design, art and craft.
Each of our cottages sleeps four in two bedrooms, one room with a queen bed and another room with 2 single beds. Each unit has a bathroom with a shower and a separate toilet. Linen and towels are provided. The kitchen is well-equipped with all the basic necessities making for a convenient and comfortable stay. This includes an electric fridge-freezer and gas stove with oven. The open-plan living area opens up onto an outdoor dining deck with large glass windows and sliding doors offering views of nature, inside and out. The cottages are completely off-grid being powered by the sun and water heated by gas. Our water comes from a mountain spring on the farm and is naturally coloured by the geology and fynbos vegetation. For those cold and rainy days, there is a wood-burning fireplace in the lounge to keep you warm and cosy. (A complimentary bundle of seasoned firewood is provided.)
NB* Please note:
- No braais or outdoor fires are permitted
- There is no signal or wifi on the property
- The solar system is limited.
The wildflowers and fresh spring water brought us to this mountain as well as our passion for conservation. We moved to the Kogelberg in 2022 with the aim of rehabilitating the old wildflower farm, minimising human impact on the property and returning as much space as possible back to wilderness. The River Retreat gives us the opportunity to share this magnificent landscape with you. We are grateful for the contribution your stay plays in the long-term maintenance and conservation goals of the property.
