We loved everything about the property. It was the best stay we’ve had, the location, the staff were amazing and so attentive and kind. The food was exceptional and we will definitely be back. I can honestly say it was one of the best places we’ve stayed and would highly recommend to our friends.

The Galtres is an old building right in the centre of the city. The Shambles is just around the corner. The rooms are so quaint, and the lodge has been decorated beautifully. The staff were very friendly and allowed us to leave a small suitcase at reception after we checked out so that we could do a bit more sightseeing before driving home. The breakfast was delicious, chefs kiss! We had the Full English and I’d definitely recommend. A couple of tips for anyone wanting to stay in York: we used the park and ride so that we didn’t have to park in the city. We parked our car at Askham Bar Park & Ride, it’s free and secure. Then we took the bus into town with a one way single ticket, which cost around £3 each. York is quite small. We managed to walk the whole city around 3 times in 24 hours. I can recommend the City Sightseeing bus. Your ticket is valid 24 hours and you have an audio guide, so you can learn interesting facts about the city and its history. The day we went it was pouring with rain, so we decided to go and watch a movie at the Everyman cinema. That was lovely, very small with couches and service at your seat. We stopped for a Guinness at the Tank and Paddle. It’s expensive there but you have a great view of the river and if there’s a special sports event, you’ll be able to catch it on one of their 20 TVs dotted around the restaurant. We had cocktails and food at The Slug and Lettuce. Everything was amazing, I would go there again next time. The Shambles is the oldest street in York and so pretty! We wanted to grab a bite to eat before exploring further and stumbled upon a street-food-esque shop called Shambles Kitchen. You get pulled pork sandwiches, among other things. Highly recommend! And how can we forget Bettys? A stunning tea room situated in the centre of town. You’ll need to book a table in advance if you don’t want to stand in a mile long queue.

A wonderful historical place to visit.

A wonderful historical place to visit. When we went, there was loads of scaffolding, but have patinece with the crowds and don't rush your visit. Meander around and soak up all the independent shops,

This open air market was smaller and a bit expensive to what lm used to. The interesting food AROUND the market place were cheaper and fresher than others in inner middle. Recommend 2 people to share the No 16 (double chicken gyros and pitta bread) platter.

Try a visit in either early morning or late evening. If the shops are closed it’s a good time to visit as the crowds will be gone and you’ll be able to appreciate the buildings. Sadly when the shops are open it’s almost impossible to move!

This area is usually beautiful to walk down, full of amazing architecture and history. However, this time, so disappointed that one particular shop was using the Shambles has a queuing spot, so it was tricky for anyone else who wanted to look at any of the other shops to navigate. I felt this was very inconsiderate of this shop and I honestly don’t know how the surrounding shops cope, its not on and I think York council need to do something about it. :(
