We love this ryokan so much we didn't want to leave! The room is spacious and beautiful especially with the river view from the outdoor bath terrace. Staff is very friendly and the food is delicious! The compound of the ryokan is serene and beautiful surrounded by autumn foliage, we would like to come back again!

A nice little gem in Kurokawa. From the moment I entered the premisses I was very impressed! It has a nice rustic feel to it with some modern twists. The open air onsen was very nice and after you are finished you can relax outside in your yukata while enjoying the beutiful garden in front of the reception. The staff is very friendly and service oriented. They spoke english well, so it was easy to communicate. Dinner and breakfast was great. We were able to pay using credit card which was much appreciated. I can easily recommend this hotel!

THis was my first stay in a Ryokan and it did not disappoint. THe whole experience was magical - the room, the view over the hills, forest and town, the baths. The meals were excellent - two different breakfasts and and we took to the opportunity to have the Kaiseki dinners - an amazing assortment of tastes and textures. Kurokawa is a magical town that is wonderful to walk aroundand we took the opportunity to get an Onsen passport to try a few of the other baths. THe parking is easy. THe staff were excellent and patiently helped us understand the way to to enjoy a Ryokan

I really like the traditional Japanese-style rooms at the Japanese inn. There was also a small hot spring bath in the room I stayed in this time, which was great! The meals provided by the hotel are also delicious. It's a pity to stay only for one night. I really want to stay a few more nights! I will definitely visit again if I have the chance.

I travelled with my husband and 9 month old, and our stay was fantastic! We booked a private room, with dinner and breakfast included, and I'm so glad we did. The food was amazing, a great mix of Kumamoto local cuisine (basashi, and karashi renkon) with some wonderful Japanese staples (sashimi, soba and udon, miso soup). The staff were so kind to us, and when my daughter got a little fussy (tired) they would come by to make her smile and giggle. It was really appreciated. If you are traveling with a baby or young child I do think booking a private room as better, because the other outdoor onsens are great, but there isn't an area to change your baby when you get in and out of the bath, so it can be a little chilly. (Maybe more applicable to winter, spring-summer is probably fine).

This ryokan is exceptional. From the decor to the facilities to the friendliness of the general staff we felt welcomed and relaxed throughout. We had planned to visit other onsen ryokan on our visit to Kurokawa but quickly realised that we didn’t need to - it was all right here. There are 6 private unique baths on top of the excellent rotenburo (men’s and women’s outdoor pools separate but alternate each day) and with our limited time in Kurokawa (one night only) we were able to make use of 4 of the private baths and both of the rotenburo (one on each of the days). A great feature was the no booking system for the private baths - it was first come first serve but there were lights that showed you which was occupied. Even better, there was a screen on the tv in your room which told you which were occupied so you could plan which one to go to before you headed down. There was also public indoor baths but we didn’t have time to utilise these. Our kids (ages 11 and 15) enjoy the table tennis and the massage chairs as well as the baths. The views over the river from our room were beautiful especially at night with the illuminations in the river downstream from the bridge easily visible. We really enjoyed the food though some of the selections were a bit too challenging for the kids. Surprisingly though they both enjoyed the horse-meat sashimi!

Rooms were tidy, clean and comfort, enjoyed the outdoor hot spring with good view but lack of toiletries and amenities compared to indoor hot spring (Indoor hot spring was small). There is a swing set on the hill with beautiful natural surrounding and a walking track (a nice jog) just outside the hotel entrance. Unlimited alcohol and non-alcohol beverages (i.e. sake, spirit, whisky, soft drink you name it) at dinner was great!

The hot spring is good. Between 9pm to 10:30pm, free noodles (raimen) will be provided, which is unexpected and exceeding my expectation. The buffet dinner is also very good. The location is very near Mount Aso (only 25mins driving time to Mount Aso Peak / Museum).

The onsens at the adjacent building were really nice and usually empty so it feels like we had our own private onsens all the time. The kaiseiki dinner is a selection of dishes prepared with local ingredients and is highly recommended.

Shinmeikan is a truly amazing ryokan/ onsen. The whole building just oozes authenticity. Great tatami style rooms overlooking the river, super friendly staff who will help you with all your needs. Great onsen baths, especially the cave bad is spectacular. Dinner and breakfast are equally high quality and display a variety of Japanese cuisine. Absolute perfect place if you want to experience traditional Japanese onsen style ryokan.
