Richar gidste ons naar de hoogste top van het eiland en kon heel wat vertellen over het leven op Amantani. Wij kwamen uit Juliaca via de ferry aan Puerto Chifron en Richar regelde voor ons een boot om de volgende ochtend terug te keren Puno. Lucrecia zorgde voor heel lekker eten. Achteraf gezien hadden we beter 2 nachten gebleven. Dan was er wat meer tijd geweest, bvb om met Richar te gaan vissen.

Sunrise over the lake is exquisite, the water often perfectly still, and the birdlife abundant. We found ourselves slowing down completely — reading books, braving the cold lake waters during the warmest part of the day, and playing cards together in the cozy dining hut. The peace here is profound. Don Mario offers a two-hour boat tour through the village, guiding guests through the reed beds while explaining how generations of Uros have used these reeds to cook, build, and navigate the lake they hold sacred. It was deeply moving and fascinating to learn about a way of life that feels both ancient and fragile, yet still very much alive. Both Mario and Lea are also gifted artisans. Don Mario creates drawings that beautifully capture the lake and its culture, while Mama Lea transforms these designs into pillow covers, table runners, and wall hangings that are truly lovely and meaningful keepsakes. A few practical notes: the showers are gravity-fed and solar-heated, which means lower water pressure and the hottest water in the late afternoon. The midday sun is intense, so wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen are essential. Finally, a word about Uros itself. Before arriving, I read many reviews dismissing the islands as a tourist trap rather than a genuine community. While tourism clearly plays an important role in the local economy, it is equally clear that this is a real, living community with deep roots. The Uros have existed here for countless generations, passing down knowledge, skills, and craftsmanship. They are skilled fishermen and masters of using reeds for nearly everything imaginable.

De Titicaca Aruntawi Lodge Peru ligt in Puno en biedt accommodatie met uitzicht op het meer. Het ontbijt is elke dag inbegrepen. heel vriendelijk onthaal, transfer van hotel in Puno naar de lodge is perfect geregeld. We hebben ook erg genoten van het terras bij de lodge. We kregen ook een boottocht langs de drijvende eilanden met veel uitleg over de manier waarop de Uros leven en werken. Ook het eten is erg lekker.

Uros Samarana Uta Lodge ligt in Puno en biedt een zonneterras en uitzicht op de bergen. Het meer van Titicaca ligt op 7 km van de accommodatie. We loved this opportunity to experience the peace of Lake Titicaca in a gorgeous location. The host, Cesar, was kind and helpful. We really appreciated the personal tour of his community - meeting family, picking his little boy up from school. The food was also delicious. This was a highlight of our trip to Peru.

Delia and Wilber were great, very friendly, we learned a lot about living on the island. They took us on the boat fishing, we tried on the traditional clothes and they booked for us the trip to Taquile island. Meal was delicious. Delia is a great cook. Beatiful sunsets. It was really relaxing stay.
