FAQs about hotels in Basque Country
A Vibrant Land of Gourmet Cuisine, Sandy Beaches and Fascinating Culture
Spanning the French-Spanish border, the beautiful coastal Basque Country lays a lot at your feet: renowned gourmet cuisine, stunning mountainous landscapes and wide, sandy beaches. And not forgetting its stormy history and vibrant cities - they’re a real cherry on top!
Its capital, Vitoria-Gasteiz, the 2nd largest in the region and one of the greenest European cities, features a charming town centre with Gothic churches and Renaissance town houses. More contemporary examples of architecture can be found in the region’s biggest city, Bilbao, home to the world-famous symbol and architectural gem of the Guggenheim Museum.
The Basque Country is not all about architecture though. Try the other tourist destinations of Pamplona - with the famous running of the bulls during the San Fermin festival - or San Sebastian, the popular beach resort with a picturesque coastline and great beaches.
Wherever you go, keep in mind (and later in your mouth!) the delicious pintxos, the Basque equivalent of Spanish tapas and wash them down with some local beverages - the unique Sagardoa cider, Txakoli wine or Patxaran, a pink-coloured sloe liquor.
Booking.com offers a wide choice of luxury and boutique hotels, friendly guest houses and comfortable country houses for your Basque Country visit.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.8Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 265 reviewsThe breakfast and the dinner were amazing, really fantastic food made with local produce. At night we have been able to sit by the fire in the conservatory area. It would be a great place for families with the animals, grounds and play area. The owners are really helpful and kind. It a great location if you have a car, to drive to different towns and into the countryside. Lots of nice cosy nooks to enjoy a morning coffee or a warm eveningGuest review byEaarcherPeru

Breakfast was ok (not particularly lux but acceptable). Parking is abundant. Pool was awesome. Lots of loungers around in the grassy area.Guest review byRolandNetherlands

Bilbao is lovely for those who appreciate art and good food...
Bilbao is lovely for those who appreciate art and good food more than a sun-and-sea holiday. Because, remember, this is *northern* Spain, which is Ireland-like in temperature and precipitation. Bring an umbrella and some water-resistant shoes! In the height of summer, that's actually a plus, so do consider it as an alternative to the too-hot Mediterranean. For a weekend city-break, Bilbao's ideal: I'd have a harder time enjoying a full week, though, honestly. You can enjoy the Guggenheim in a few hours (it's huge, but so are its sculptures and installations). Like in much of Atlantic-facing Europe, the weather is all over the place, but generally rainier than sunny, which may wear you down after a while. And the famous pintxos are fresh and delicious, but you will get tired of the same series of them, eventually. Bilbao, like Spain, generally, isn't super vegetarian-friendly. Lots of meat, seafood, carbs, and preserved peppers and very few fresh veggies in the cuisine. That extends, especially, to breakfast, which is more "Continental" and of the bread and pastries variety. I did find myself pining for salad or any kind of fiber, generally, after a few days! The wine scene is more diverse and interesting than beer or cocktails, and at very reasonable prices. You can find an excellent cup of coffee and the fika options are excellent for any Scandinavians who are into pastries with their afternoon cup! If you're staying longer than a day or two, do take advantage of the buses or metro to take some side-trips to San Sebastian or the coast to get a little more variety in your backdrop. (San Sebastian has a lively seaside and beautiful architecture, but that charm comes with high costs: it's maybe the most exclusive area in Spain). And get and use the "Barik" card to get around on the excellent public transit, including the cheap bus to/from the airport.Guest review byGeoffreySweden - 8.0

San Sebastian is a nice place to visit with a number of areas to explore and beaches for swimming and surfing. The tapas is very good in most places, however, your host will recommend the best places for you. I recommend lunch at one of the restaurants on the beach, they are reasonably priced and have good food. Try the Sangria if they have it. It is a very difficult place to drive around and you will probably get lost more than once.Guest review byMarkAustralia - 8.0

Couldn't get round everywhere I would have like. The Boulevard shopping mall is right next door providing good shopping, fast food restaurants and cafes. Should have sought out more Spanish restaurants.Guest review byAnitaRUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We found the Atalaia an ideal stopping off point on our journey to Spain and we will return again. We loved the style and size of the rooms and the modern clean bathroom. Staff were very friendly and only deficit was a lack of coffee/tea in the room.Guest review byBill StevensonUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Great location, short trip to Ferry, Very good wifi in room, Max Centre very close for fast food, secure parking for my motorcycle from 11pm to 8am, I still recommend to use locks on your motorcycle like every other hotel. Friendly staff and easy checkin, Bar, breakfast cost 10 euro and well worth it. Room was quiet and large enough for solo or couple.Guest review byTimUnited Kingdom - 8.0

its a lovely hotel and the old village is well worth a visit. going to the village is a must . We have been three times now. Plenty of eating places and a few shops. If you like wine book a visit to the Winery in the village itself.Guest review byRoyUnited Kingdom - 8.0
The beaches and harbour were lovely.
The beaches and harbour were lovely. It is well worth taking the gondola across the water to the local cafes and old town area. The promenade is long and makes wonderful walking by the sea. There are all kinds of games and water sports available. Getxo is a Spanish resort. Bars in town offer snacks (pintxo) with beer/wine etc. Restaurants are on the promenade reached by lift. Very little English is spoken except in the restaurants on the promenade.Guest review byMargaretUnited Kingdom
