First of all, the hotel is located in the MOST BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE CITY, near two beautiful beaches...! The city center can be reached quickly by bus, and the station is a minute away from the hotel. When I was looking for accommodation, I was delighted by the photos of the hotel - and everything is really BEAUTIFUL, TIDY, CLEAN. What truly makes Alima special is the couple who owns it. They’re genuinely warm and welcoming, and go out of their way to make sure every guest has a memorable experience. And of course, the surf: great waves, often uncrowded. The owners local knowledge is invaluable – every day he pointed me to the best spots for the current conditions. Gustavo and his wife and daughter showed themselves to be warm and compassionate hosts on a very rainy night when my wife and i arrived cold and soaked to the skin after two hours walking in miserable rain. Even though the restaurant was closed, they opened up the kitchen specially and cooked us a delicious hot meal. We will be forever grateful for their kindness. We recommend Finca Alcamino for anyone wanting warmth and comfort on their pilgrimmage!

The Colours of Nature

Bordered by the Bay of Biscay to the north, the small Spanish region of Cantabria is known for undulating, lush landscapes which sharply rise to sheer peaks in the south-western Picos de Europa mountain range.

The capital Santander is an important port and has a long promenade lining its sandy beach. The coastline to the west is packed with Cantabria hotels on the beach, some of which are in Comillas. This small town has a number of interesting buildings, including Gaudí’s Capricho. West in the Oyambre National Park is San Vincente de la Barquera. Take to the water for spectacular views of this village, its impressive bridge and the often snow-capped mountains beyond.

At Suances to the east, green cliffs plunge to the sea, while nearby medieval Santillana del Mar is the closest town to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Altamira cave paintings. Another medieval jewel is inland Potes whose cobbled streets and stone bridge over a stream are all in the shade of the Cantabrian mountains. In the east of the region, the rocks at Noja descend into crystal-clear waters, while Laredo’s curving bay ends in a hill that offers lovely views.

    We absolutely loved our stay at Cabañas con Encanto! It totally met all of our expectations. The location is incredibly serene and peaceful, surrounded only by other cabins spaced out at a perfect distance, with the soothing sound of the river in the valley below. The view was simply breathtaking! From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed—the hosts had already heated the cabin for us, making it cozy and inviting. Everything we needed for a comfortable stay was provided: a well-equipped kitchen (including a moka pot, toaster, pans, and even a dishwasher), a reliable heating system, a hot shower, and a charming fireplace with firewood ready to use. We couldn’t have imagined a better place to spend two perfect days immersed in nature. Highly recommended—this place is truly magical!

    Beautiful beaches but you can see why this place hasn’t taken off as a tourist resort. No one speaks English. It’s not child friendly. Nothing opens until 9. Then everywhere that serves food closes at 3/4pm, then opens at 8pm again. It’s no good with young children.

    It's a pretty medieval town, and I read that they control development, yet it still allows souvenir shops! It suffers in the way all pretty touristy places do: not many decent places to eat at a reasonable price. After one evening looking around we used the hotel as a base to travel to other places. I'd recommend a day visit at most.

    We stayed here because we had a ferry to catch the following day it only took us 30minutes to drive from here to Santander. It was a beautiful town, beautiful views, houses and was a very quiet calm atmosphere. We were glad we picked and booked the hotel we stayed in. We will return next year for our return home from Portugal.

    Castro Urdiales is a beautiful place to visit and stay. The people there are friendly and helpful In bars/cafes/shops etc where staff are plesent and helpful at all times. The area is very clean and welcoming. There are beautiful walks and interesting places to see. It is very easy to get round the area and buses are plentiful. Eating and drinking is in abundance everywhere. The entire town is walker friendly and very beautiful at night when the Cathedral and Castle are lit up. It features a long prom and a short prom with fantastice views over the ocean. 20 minutes drive from Bilboa. 45 minutes drive from Santander.

    San Vicente is very Spanish and where the Spanish like to holiday - especially in August - to escape the heat of the cities further south. While the staff in hospitality are generally happy to help, visitors with a good knowledge of Spanish will enjoy it more. Known for its excellent seafood, and local cheeses, it is a feast for the eyes!

    Borja, Lorrena, Fernando and Diego (barman - not his real name) were fantastic staff members at Hotel Olimpo, so friendly, welcoming, helpful and fun. Food was amazing, hotel was immaculate with beautiful views. Amazing location, lovely walk across the beach to Noja. Isla is lovely with quirkly little shops and nice walks. I stayed here with my husband and teenage son and all three of us had a fabulous time and look forward to returning.     Absolutely great location to stay & explore on a motorbike. Main thing to remember is to avoid the restaurants in the centre that are over priced with poor service & substandard food & are probably the downside of the entire region. There are an abundance of great cafes, bars & restaurant's all around the back streets & well worth exploring. This really is one picturesque town with allot to offer just take the time to find the gems & avoid the obvious tourist traps.

    Laredo has a lovely old part to the town with a huge number...

    Laredo has a lovely old part to the town with a huge number of places to eat and drink. There is also a beautiful Gothic style church with a Guide who speaks English. 1,euro entry. The Comino trail runs along the coast and through the town so is easily accessible. Near to the harbour/marina is a tunnel which runs through the cliff about 200 metres. Free. There are murals on the walls of fish. A trip to Santona by boat is well worth it as it goes out across the bay to see the lighthouse and along the coast to see the old Forts. There is also an excellent natural history museum which looks at the history of the area and the wildlife. Free entry. There is also a footpath where you can walk out to the Forts and lighthouse. The Alsa coach service runs coaches all over Spain and are very reasonable, best to book online. Santander to Laredo direct took 40minutes and cost 22euros for seniors. The coaches have reclining seats, WiFi, toilets. The area is very Spanish with few people speaking English but they are extremely helpful.

    We were there at a quiet time - at the height of the tourist...

    We were there at a quiet time - at the height of the tourist season I imagine it could be rather busy. If you enjoy a variety of sea views - beaches and rocky coastlines - then the area is perfect. Also the hinterland is very varied with numerous pretty villages and excellent driving roads.

    The Gaudi Mansion tour was a very well spent 7E.

    The Gaudi Mansion tour was a very well spent 7E. Informative and fascinating - don’t miss it, only about 5 minute walk from La Magia. Very nice town plaza and places to eat and shop. Dinner at Hotel Esmeralda was a fair price and good food.
