- From US$208.99 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,417 reviewsSWAN Hotel is so excellent. I like this hotel very much. Clean, quiet, warm and friendly staff, beautiful surrounding environment. Breakfast is great. I like the interior decoration of the hotel very much, with style and a typical rural atmosphere. The bus stop is opposite the hotel, which is very convenient to go anywhere. I will also book this hotel next time when I come to Lake District.Guest review byXIUMINChina
- From US$266.96 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 2,469 reviewsAn old hotel with a special atmosphere, situated in its own large garden (with rabbits nibbling on the grass...), It was quiet as it is on the town outskirts, but 5 min walk to Keswick center. Access to walking paths direct from the hotel. Parking available on site. We had a nice and relatively large room with a view to the bunnies....The staff was very nice.Guest review byTamarIsrael

The hotel was in a good location within walking distance to the town of Windemere and Bowness-on-Windermere which had a lot more to offer than the actual town of Windermere. We found a great pub called The Brookside where we ate in the evenings for the short time we visited near to our hotel. which was a bonus.Guest review bySandraUnited Kingdom - 8.0

The roads are horrible (very narrow) and large buses come down them forcing you to back up down the road to a pullout. The drivers in the area are terrible -probably other tourists. Parking areas and hiking trails are not well marked. The rain was constant. The area is beautiful and there is great hiking when the weather cooperates. I loved the Catbells hike and Castlerigg Stone Circle.Guest review byHeidiUnited States - 10.0

Bowness is a fabulous base to sightseeing from. It's a lovely little area of the Lake District. Very busy at times and too much traffic and not enough parking spaces. Best to get there early if you need to park. Lots of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. Sunday market. Lots to see and do.Guest review bygailUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Pedestrian Plaza under construction - when finished will be an asset. Variety of shops, some in covered markets - weather protection for travellers. Visited Cathedral and Cafe - both worthwhile . Overnight stay on route to Penrith for Family History research - Library staff very helpful.Guest review byDaphneAustralia - 8.0
Ambleside itself is a very sweet little town.
Ambleside itself is a very sweet little town. We stayed in the outskirts which I would definitely recommend as it gets very busy and overwhelming. The streets and paths are quite small and not built for the foot traffic it gets. It's a really nice spot to visit in the evening for some food or a pint after a long day of hiking. We would recommend The Apple Pie Cafe, and the pizzas at Mama Mia were expensive but very goodGuest review byJodieUnited Kingdom - 10.0

I know Penrith well, I used to live and work here and its always a pleasure to return. It's a great little town with lots of great places to stay and eat, additionally the Lakes are on the doorstep and the locals are sooooo friendly. Additionally, not being in the National Park makes things a tad cheaper.Guest review byDavidUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Kendal is a great location between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. It is large enough to have a lot of choices of restaurants, grocery and shopping options. The Castle is a lovely walk, it's beautiful, and has lots of walking paths and green spaces for dogs as well as people. We loved the markets and the local towns around, as well.Guest review bySusanUnited States - 8.0

Grasmere is like nowhere else - it’s absolutely stunning and has a tranquil feel to it that just makes you feel so relaxed and content when you’re there. Plenty of walks, scenery, cafes, restaurants, a decent pub and lots of beautiful hotels to choose from. The gingerbread shop is gorgeous! There’s so much to see here. I can’t imagine anyone not liking Grasmere! Simply beautiful.Guest review byRachelUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Has a nice period 'feel'.
Has a nice period 'feel'. Lots of one-off shops and very few national chain stores. Quite hilly, which could be challenging in slippery conditions. The promenade provides an excellent, uncluttered walk along the marshy coastline, particularly in good weather. Lots of great, family-run restaurants and 'eating pubs'. Provides a civilised alternative to the popular holiday resorts.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom
