- From US$117.98 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,059 reviewsLocation was just a short walk from the beach and close to lots of good restaurants and cafes. The beach is an excellent location for collecting sea glass. The room was superb, clean, warm (as we visited during Winter) with tea and coffee making facilities and an excellent rainfall shower. It is an unmanned hotel but the access instructions we received on the morning were easy to follow. I was able to communicate with the property via text when I had a question. Would thoroughly recommend this property.Guest review byJuliaAustralia

Would highly recommend staying here, breakfast the next morning is probably the best we've ever had in a hotel.Guest review byAmandaUnited Kingdom

We loved Durham but the Townhouse -the property we booked and paid for through booking.com had shut down. So this was a very stressful start to our stay. We had to find and pay for alternative accommodation out of town as all hotels were booked. Now I cannot get through to anyone from booking.com to get a refund as their help centre is hopelessGuest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Barnard Castle is set high up on the Pennines, surrounded by wild and beautiful moorland. The town itself is warm and friendly with a good choice of eating places. For those who like history, the ruined castle is always worth seeing; the Bowes Museum, built as a huge french chateau takes a day to look around properly. There is a street market on Wednesdays and lots of artisan shops to enjoy for the rest of the week. The river Tees which flows through Barnard Castle is very beautiful and photogenic.Guest review byAnonymous - 2.0
Hidden gem is a very interesting choice of name for this...
Hidden gem is a very interesting choice of name for this property as in my experience of the house, there was no beauty and it definitely should be kept hidden from anyone looking for accommodation in County Durham! The location of the property is in a blacked out data and phone signal area and according to the Bureau of Statistics, the location has a seriously high crime rate. Both of these facts, the hosts neglects to list in his description. As for the crime rate, I can believe this as someone tried to break in whilst I was out. The door was damaged and a locksmith had to come and repair it. Mould has set in to the silicon around the bath, the beds and sofa are well worn out and there was a bin liner full of household waste left in the rear courtyard that was attacked by noisy foxes during the night. The host also fails to list in his description that he has a camera inside facing the front door, which I imagine breaches privacy laws. The property is a tacky residence that has signs of being neglected whilst trying to squeeze as much money as possible out of would-be renters. Avoid disappointment and steer clear of this property and any other property this host may promote! He is very short on honesty with his listings!Guest review byJonathanUnited Kingdom - 4.0
Run down was probably what I will remember of this place.
Run down was probably what I will remember of this place. Funny enough the city cemetery was probably one of the most peaceful places to be. Lovely trees and walking areas. Would recommend that as a place to visit.Guest review byAngelaM777United Kingdom - 8.0

We stayed in Stanley due to the proximity to the Beamish open air museum just a short drive away. The bluebell inn, just a short walk from the Ball Alley, is a restruant within a pub, not a pub serving food. The food had a turkish theme and was wonderful. I will return if in the area again.Guest review byRobert - 10.0

Seaham seems very run down with most of the shops shuttered up. We went in August and a lot of bars and places to eat weren't open which we found surprising. One bar wouldn't serve us at 9.45pm as they were closing. The beach is quite hard to reach down lots of steps.Guest review byLauraUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We booked accommodation for evening at Grassholme observatory - clear night and knowledgeable and enthusiatic leaders. Middleton in Teesdale had a selecd.tion of pubs/restaurants but very little else. However trips to High Force and Bowes musuem, made the weekend enjoyable.Guest review byAndrew - North YorkshireUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Beamish is a fantastic place to visit for the whole family.
Beamish is a fantastic place to visit for the whole family. Staff are all in Period Costume of the day and give you the history of that period. It's so big, we recommend riding on one of many Period Trams and Buses to your chosen area, as it can be a long walk. We highly recommend doing Beamish over several daysif you can, as it's too much of a rush to do it all in one day.Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom
