This place is truly a hidden gem in Kaikohe. In a town not widely known for its accommodation options, this property genuinely pushes boundaries, creating local employment, contributing to the town’s revival, and setting a new benchmark for hospitality in the area. The building itself is a stunning 115-year-old masterpiece, designed in classic New Zealand neo-classical style. The hosts have gone to remarkable lengths to preserve its historic charm while seamlessly incorporating modern comforts. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, from the beds and showers to the taps, teapots, and furniture, all reflecting an authentic early-1900s look and feel without sacrificing convenience or comfort. It is a rare and beautifully executed blend of history and modern living. The manager was exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and supportive, which made the experience even more memorable. This stay far exceeded our expectations, and we truly enjoyed every moment. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates heritage, character, and the chance to experience what a classic stay in the early 1900s might have felt like, elevated to modern standards.

Kerikeri is an important historical area, particularly The Stone Store and Kemp House. One should take time to learn about the impacts, both negative and positive, of European colonization, and experience the richness and sophistication of the Maori culture.

Kaitaia for me is like the gateway to Cape Reinga & the other places to visit in the Far North. We stayed for 2 nights, used it as a base, travelled up to the Cape & back. Then travelled towards Dargaville & home to the Waikato via the majestic Tane Mahuta.

I love everything about Russell.

I love everything about Russell. It is such an iconic place, full of history. I actually met a lady walking along the beach whose forebearers had built the The Duke of Malborough. The shops have so many wonderful things to offer and the people so friendly and helpful. Apart from The Duke of Malborough which always sets the highest standard in their restaurant which produces incredible food, I must mention Hone’s Garden. The pizzas are outstanding and mixed with a craft beer and friendly staff it’s not hard to see why it is always our first port of call. They have managed to create a laid back, island vibe surrounded by tropical plants. Just in front of Hone’s is The Gables, a fabulous Italian Restaurant. The Lamb Ragu with home made pasta again is exceptional. You would go along way to find three amazing places all within walking distance with views to die for. In terms of boat trips, we can heartily recommend The Hole in the Rock. Our last two lots of visitors thoroughly enjoyed this experience and the added bonus of seeing dolphins and a shark. Just remember to wear something warm as can be a bit cold depending on the weather. Well worth it though!

Opononi and Omapere are two small seaside towns within a 5km stretch of the west coast of Northland, near the mouth of the Hokianga harbour. The scenery is stunning, but the accommodation and eating options are fairly limited.

Mangonui is gorgeous - fabulous walkway, unique art & gift shops, great eating - Breakfast at Jesse's was huge & delicious. It is also handy to all the East Coast beaches - the north is always a favourite trip down memory lane for us.

Great beach and good location to explore the far North area. We took a bus tour up to Cape Reinga which was a real highlight and explored nearby Cape Karikari in our car. We ate our dinners at Mangonui, a 5 minute drive from Coopers Beach

if you want to stay for a few days, this is perfect as it had a seperate living area to the bedroom with a kitchenette. We were close to the pool and backed onto a lovely garden. Resturant is a lovely spot to watch the beach and sunset while enjoying a drink or meal.

Nice laid-back place way up North, with friendly people everywhere. The shops are clean and well-patronised, saw a couple of locals take off their gumboots at the entrance, woww! The ambience of Pukenui and it's residents reflected the calmness of Houhora Harbour, and respect for the environment. The fishing with Rob Parker of Houhora Fishing Charter was superb, relaxed and "real". If you want great fishing on the water then this is a must stay place! It's a easy pleasant trip up to Cape Reinga from Pukenui, beautiful white sand beaches are accessible all up the top of Te Tai Tokerau/Northland NZ. We'll be back!!
