I recently stayed at Whalley Abbey. Initially, because it is an abbey, I thought some monks may be around. There once were, but alas, no more. It seems the monks arrived in the year 1296 and departed in 1537. Whalley Abbey has had a long and varied history and now it is a retreat situated in very impressive grounds. Upon entering the main building to check-in, I was amazed by what I saw; Intricate wood panelling, high ceilings, an enormous stone fireplace and so much more. As it was quite close to Christmas, the fireplace was part decorated with white trailing lights and it looked magical. The breakfast room on the lower floor, is spacious and has another enormous stone fireplace (of a different design to the one on the floor above). For breakfast, I thought it might be something along the lines of a continental option but I was pleased to find that a cooked breakfast was all included in the price. The building has a guest lounge and has plenty of seating. The best part of the room is above. The ceiling has quite an extraordinary pattern all over it. I have never seen anything like it before. My room was large with a high beamed ceiling. A visit to Whalley Abbey would not be complete without walking around the extensive grounds. There are a number of ruined buildings (all due to the history of the place) and you can walk in and through many of these and see where the monks worked, lived and prayed. I very much enjoyed my stay at Whalley Abbey. I discovered that the area where the abbey is situated (not been to that part of the country before) has great walking country and there are many villages, towns and a couple of cities not far away to visit and explore. All of the staff I met at Whalley Abbey were friendly and professional. All this helped to make my stay an enjoyable one. If you like a quiet environment as I do, this is the sort of place you will find it. Will I make a return visit to Whalley Abbey? Absolutely!
