Gidleigh Park- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel, hotel in Chagford

Nestled in a wooded valley, Gidleigh Park features 107 acres of mature grounds, within the wilds of Dartmoor. With an award winning restaurant, this estate is just 6 minutes’ drive from Chagford.

Everything! We were so sad to leave. We love travel so have stayed in some amazing hotels across the world (including other Relais & Chateaux properties), but after our stay at Gidleigh Park, we realized this might have been the BEST hotel ever - even including some very special Japanese ryokans. What made it so wonderful: - The staff were all so genuinely nice. We had a lot of odd requests (since I’m pregnant and my husband has very specific dietary preferences), and I’m sure they secretly thought we were total weirdos, but they did a great job covering this up - no request was too strange! Examples: 1.) my husband became addicted to Innocent smoothies during our stay in England and insisted on having some every day (…even in a Michelin-starred hotel), so they kept them in the fridge for us and brought out the bottles whenever he wanted to pour a glass; 2.) I went down each morning to have breakfast but my husband prefers to sleep in, so I would request a takeaway homemade croissant for him. This request alone wasn’t too bad perhaps, but the croissants were so good warmed up, so we would later request to have them warmed right before he ate them - which they kindly did… - The food is SUPERB - I could’ve eaten for weeks straight just at the casual lounge (we’d normally try the formal restaurant too, but saving this for next time when I have fewer pregnancy food restrictions, to fully enjoy!). Best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had, with perfectly poached golden-orange yolks (I’ve only ever seen such perfect eggs before in Japan), sumptuous afternoon tea, truffled cheese soufflé, really good strong pots of Earl Grey and Mini Pu Erh Cake (!) tea, amazing fresh fish and brothy beans… all in a cozy casual living room/conservatory setting where they let you open the patio doors, or sit outdoors (very nice if you’re being extra Covid-cautious while pregnant like me)!

I loved this little village, enough to keep me interested. Great shops that catered for people with food allergies. Would definitely return. Ate at both The Three Crowns and Chagford Inn, both of which were excellent.

Excellent choice of places to eat, pubs and cafes. Good range of shops with butchers and bakers as well as a Spar convenience store. Bowden hardware was a real highlight, an alladins cave... Something for everyone! The main reason for our visit was the local walks, Fenworthy Reservoir and Castle Drogo were two we enjoyed, would go further next time. Very dog friendly area.

Such a pretty market town, Lots of independent shop and cafes. Plenty of scenic walks. Chagford has an outdoor fresh water swimming pool set in very scenic surroundings. Breath taking views of the surrounding countryside. The town itself is bursting to the seams with very old buildings and cottages (some thatched) and is steeped in history.

The cottage was adorable. Lots of lovely touches like a tray laid out for tea when we arrived. The bed was incredibly comfortable which was wonderful. Beautiful garden with added bonus of some rosemary and thyme in pots for cooking. Chagford is a great place to be based, four good pubs, butcher, two bakeries, a dairy, Spar, couple of farm shops and several cafes. We didn't use the car once while we were visiting as there were enough walking options to keep us busy. Frances and Peter were great hosts.

Everything is so stylish yet simple, and beautifully curated in the bedrooms and the cafe. We had a great sleep in a gorgeous room, and a tasty and generous breakfast of poached eggs with bacon, and with avocado for breakfast. It was such a treat to be hosted by Posy and Matt; every moment and every detail of our short visit was truly exceptional, we couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay in Chagford.

Greeted on arrival by Cheryl, whom we saw often the next 48 hours and who made a very good place special. All the staff, in fact, were friendly and competent. The room was a little small, but very comfortable, nonetheless. Great to have a parking space behind the hotel. The breakfasts were outstanding. Perfect base for enjoying the moors of Dartmoor.

A hotel of this standard should have freshly squeezed orange juice and better fruit salad. Home made bread at breakfast would also be a plus.
