None of my American friends have ever heard if Ancona, but I'd go back in a heartbeat. It's an important port city and is surprisingly picturesque. There's lots of variety - the harbor, the beach the churches on hills, lively palazzi, many restaurants. And so much history. Renting a bike is a great way to get around given many historical sites are on very steep hills.

Ancona may not be an obvious holiday destination, but there's a scruffy charm to it that I like, and there's enough to do here for a couple of days. It's also a good base from which to explore the Marche region of Italy - I used trains and buses to do full-day and half-day trips to numerous interesting towns during my ten-night. (Smaller villages would require a car.)

Ancona in winter is not a tourist destination, but for those who want to experience small town Italy it has much to offer. I would recommend a visit if you are already familiar with the country. The tourist office map has 4 walks which take you around the centre. The Mole has a wonderful museum where blind, partially sighted and curious people can touch all the sculpture casts. Ancona is well connected by bus and train. The Friday market was fascinating.

Very interesting port city with a charming, historic old town. View from the cathedral perched on one promontory is magnificent… and the walk back down through the ancient streets is interesting: friendly people, good and some great restaurants serving local specialties. The Marche wines from the area are a joy to discover.

We used Ancona as an overnight stay to break up a long train ride, in hindsight we would have kept travelling to our destination. Ancona harbour and old town are worth a visit, especially the Centro old part. Our accommodation was some 30 minutes walk from Centro, the walk took in some lovely views, although steep in parts. Our accommodation was only 10 minutes walk from the train station and was quite ok to stay in, the breakfast was very nice.

A mixed city - the industrial port at one end and quiet residential / tourist areas at the other. The western residential area is nice to stay, near the cliffs and Passetto beach. More a place to relax than for frantic sightseeing, although there is history if you want it.
They send a very useful help to reach the hotel by car, and there are also signs on the road, and outwards as well (you really need these; without these, we would certainly have lost). Free parking on the street, 50 meters from the hotel - and it is safe, because it is a little square in front of the guardia finanza. Lots of place to pack in the bathroom. 2 taps. Large shower, with 3 functions. The most simple wifi in our 11 days tour in Italy (with 8 hotels).
The staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. They advised me on transportation options and parking and saved me lots of time in doing so. The breakfast was quite good; plenty of options. The location right across from the central station was perfect for me since I was traveling by train in Italy. Some reviewers say the area is bad, but, while it's not ShangriLa, I wasn't uncomfortable walking around.
Great in every way for relaxation in the garden or the pool or if you want to swim in the ocean, just 50 m away. The fortress itself is amazing. Good breakfast and for those who want to experience what Italy has to offer in food from the ocean, I highly recommend dinner at the restaurant on the terrace overlooking the sea. Perfect resipe for beautiful and romantic date.
the beds were the best we had on our overnight stay! it was difficult to communicate with host who did not speak English. The location was fine but had to drive to beach. Apartment was clean and comfortable enough for overnight stay. Would not be my choice for extended stay but worked for our last minute needs. nice to have parking onsite.
The hotel is very modern, clean, and very comfortable. The individuals who worked at the hotel were very professional, helpful, and overall extremely nice. The breakfast was great, the double espresso was energizing, and the staff always were smiling!!
Overall excellent hotel, right near the center of Ancona.
Beautiful location only a short walk from Passetto beach (which has a lift for those who can't climb the steep stairs back up!) We liked the relaxed but elegant vibe of the hotel, the great breakfast and the gym. The beds were very comfortable. Very friendly and helpful staff. We hope to be able to come back!
Hotel Europa is a fine place. We loved it. It is located in a conveniente part of Ancona- a Beautiful city- but
we had a little trouble finding it. It has nothing to do with the Hotel. We did not have a GPS. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay. The hotel has a good restaurant.- great food!
Very nice location in the park. 2 public beaches are available: (1) about 300 meters from the hotel, (2) about 1 000 meters from the hotel. During the high season ( vide: august) prior reservation of beach beds and umbrella is a must. Price 30 EUR per day. Very competent and polite staff.
Amazing host who offered to pick us up from the airport as our flight was delayed and we arrived very late. As we wanted to explore Ancona and the Marche region, he gave us addresses and pin locations of best places, beaches, and restaurants. Accommodation as described.
There was nothing to dislike about the property. Everything was exceptional. This hotel is on its way to be an institution. Thankfully after a very difficult stay at two other properties this trip we were blessed enough to find The Grand Palace Hotel.
We love this hotel and always stay here before we get the ferry to Greece. Facilities are excellent, location is great and staff are lovely. Not the cheapest place but definitely the best. And cat friendly too.
Room and bathroom very clean. Wonderful location, just across the main train and bus station. My flight from London was delayed, I arrived late to Ancona, It was nice to see a receptionist welcoming.
Greag location, spacious, terrace view, best host ever Cesare! A real Italian experience, he was super nice, did a lunch for us in the cave right next to the sea and picked us up from the airport <3
Very peaceful and beautiful Agriturismo near Ancona, beaches and the ferry terminal.
Great breakfast with a variety of cakes and italian bakery. Modern and comfortable room!
could not find this hotel in time for check in as flight was delayed. Couldnt contact them as the website got hacked and i didnt trust it. Midnight and no help was given
Great host, beautiful apartment with a more beautiful balcony. Made the stay in Ancona very comfortable. Sweet breakfast with coffee included.
Hope to come back one day
The hotel is modern, clean, and in a good location. It had a comfortable bar and restaurant. The breakfast was better than most that we have encountered.
We had to find a place to sleep over in Ancona and we were delighted by this clean and wonderful little apartment. The owners so helpful with information.
