This guesthouse offers breakfast and dinner. The chef/owner possesses advanced cooking skills and uses local ingredients including goat cheese made onsite. Guests feel as if they are dining in a high end restaurant. The hosts wholeheartedly look after guests, are open to sharing experiences and entertain without intrusion. Despite our late arrival, they provided a warm welcome and delicious dinner.

I was lucky to have the place to myself. Location was great. Nakamura San recommended a nice restaurant nearby called Ichiyoshi. Staff isn’t on site but I was ok with that.

The private house was right on the Kumano.
We stayed only one night but wish it was longer.
Shino is the perfect host! After eating breakfast at her cafe, we went to board the bus across the street. I completely forgot my bag. Shino made sure I got it back! She had the bus company flag down the bus we were on and delivered it to me.
Her homemade meals and warm accommodations will not be forgotten any time soon!!

Staff was able to provide information clearly and was fluent in English. He was also very kind to pick us up from the train station for free. He also provided suggestions for sight seeing and restaurants. Highly recommend the accommodation due to the service and facilities.

Tanabe was our starting point for our Kumano Kodo trek so we stayed in Tanabe only one day not realizing how much there is to do in Tanabe. If we ever come to Tanabe again, we will be sure to stay longer to enjoy all that there is to do there. I think we could have stayed a whole week if we weren't going on our trek.

Having visited Japan so many times, this trip was probably the best of all. I followed the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage and experienced both the people, the culture and the religion of ancient Japan. I spent in total about 4 days walking and all of the accommodations (family run b&b and a hot spring hotel) was all very clean, with tasty food and friendly people. I'd love to go back again and experience the other less famous trails of the same region.

A great little town, and ideal jumping-off point for the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage.
The pub quarter was a fun place to get a drink and dinner: great Tako Yaki.
Both the Tanabe Tourist Information Centre staff and the Kumano Kodo Travel staff were impeccably professional and helpful in making arrangements for the pilgrimage walk. Cannot rate their quality of service highly enough.
This was one of the loveliest places we stayed in Japan. Delicious food, warm reception, beautiful views. It's a rustic traditional house in a remote location, but convenient to the Kumano Kodo because the owners are willing to pick up and drop off for a reasonable extra charge. The food is 4 star restaurant level, a creative blend of Italian cooking with touches of Japanese ingredients. There are chickens and goats and home made plum wine. Highly recommend a stay here!
Luigi was very accommodating. He had met us at the train station as he had expected that we will be arriving late. DJANGO Hostel is conveniently located across the train station and close all amenities. His bar is tastefully decorative and has a very welcoming and intimate atmosphere. All amenities are very clean and well supplied. I highly recommend staying at DJANGO Hostel & Lounge to enjoy Tanabe.
The location is perfect, just at the entrance of the village after the long hike, and right across the bus stop. The room is new and clean. Ike-san speaks good English and Mandarin and enjoys conversations with guests. The cooking is fun. Recommend to order the meal service since most restaurants close early and require reservations. Overall a great immersion experience on the Kumano Kodo.
The place itself is the most gorgeous old building. It's an 85 year old guesthouse and is filled with vintage charm. Probably the best vibe for all places we have etayed in Japan. Super authentic old guesthouse charm. The owner is the sweetest Japanese lady who takes the time to chat with you. Location is awesome. Near train station and restaurants and 10 minute walk to the beach.
The owner is very helpful. The location of the Minshuku is next to the bus stop. The riverside open hot spring and the village's public bath are in 2 mins walking distance. There is also a restaurant next door. We got a room on the 3rd floor with a Japanese Kotatsu (heating table). The room is cozy and quiet during the night. We enjoyed our stay in this Onsen village.
Overall, it was a decent stay for the price. Lady that met us was friendly and helpful - provided maps, bus schedules, tips, and nearby restaurant recommendations. Facility was rustic, and we were the only guest that stayed the night so that was a plus. Close to Kii Tanabe Station and just 15 minute walk to the waterfront (Ogigahama Park) for a beautiful sunset.
A lovely, comfortable, clean, and cozy place in great location when walking the kumano kodo-
The beds are comfortable, the shower has good strong and warm water pressure. The house was very well equipped with everything we needed. Surrounded by rice fields and the lovely village. The owner is a great cook, her food was delicious. She was very kind and helpful.
We had a wonderful time from the moment we arrived. Takahara is a beautiful place with views of the mountains and paddy fields. It is almost on the Kumano Kudo route. The staff is helpful and friendly. The evening meal was one of the best meals we have had in Japan, delicious and innovative. We'd be very happy to stay here again. Highly recommended.
Simon is an exceptional and generous host. He picked us up from Kii-tanabe station on our arrival and dropped us at the start of the Kumano Kodo to begin our hike the next day. He even shared some of his homemade plum wine, which was incredibly delicious! Our room was lovely with big windows, perched in a beautiful rural area in the mountains.
The guest house was very spacious, comfortable, and beautiful, located in an old Japanese home. Shino was a wonderful host — she’s very responsive and helpful, she arranged a car back to the trail in the morning, and the meals she prepared for us were delicious. Good stop along the Kumano Kodo trail!
It’s an old hotel so don’t expect anything modern but in typical Japanese fashion the service is impeccable and they give you a lot of food for free. Also every room is oceanfront. I went there because I was doing the Kumano Kodo trail which is close.
A beautiful well renovated traditional Japanese house. The host was very friendly and helpful to plan our trips and hike on Kumano Kodo. The breakfast at the café was delicious. We will stay here on our next visit. A wonderful experience!
Mr Hiroki and his wife are so warm and welcoming. They kept in close contact with me upon arrival at Tanabe and when came to pick me up to their guest house. Naoko puts her heart into preparing all the meals and its so delicious!
The hosts were very kind and warm and thought about every aspect of my stay. I was going to walk the Kumano Kodo and they even thought of alternate routes as there was a lot of rain. And the food was amazing!
Location is great. Within walking distance to Tanabe Station and major eateries. Host was most helpful in train arrangements so that I can get me and my bike onto the train.
Stayed 1 night. It's easy to find from the Kii Tanabe station. The host is a lovely lady with gorgeous smile. Would definitely stay in there again when I come to Tanabe.
Great host here providing more info about Tanabe surrounding and sightseeing spots.
really helpful and proactive to support during my staying.

Nice and clean private room, good showers and a friendly and helpful host! Very close to the bus station from where you want to start your kumano kodo hike.
It was an incredible deal. It is no frills but just what you need to start your Kumano Kodo trek. I like the open kitchen to heat my water before my trek.
