Hotel in Sassi di Matera, Matera
Set inside the Matera Sassi UNESCO site, Corte San Pietro is housed in a renovated historical building carved out of stone. It offers rooms with a private entrance and free Wi-Fi throughout. I think it’s relevant to explain my comparison base and feedback on this hotel a bit more up front: I’ve been traveling A LOT over the last 25 years (90% business, 10% private…) and have been staying over in hundreds and more hotels around the world…. The Corte San Pietro hotel in Matera is “ASTONISHING” and really ONE OF THE BEST hotels I’ve experienced in my life ! For following reasons: 1) ALL staff is exceptionally friendly, service driven and customer focused. They undertake all possible to make the stay at this hotel for their guests one to remember. Not because they’re asked to do so, but they just love their job and their customers. 2) Fresh fruit and fresh cold water is available in your hotelroom 24 hours a day (at no costs…) 3) The hotel rooms are an experience by themselves. They’re partly digged out from old Matera caves, breathing a real historical ambiance, are impeccably clean and only offer high quality products (bath, shower, soapsh, towels and more…). You also receive a bronze “plaquette” with your name on that is placed right next to your hotelroom door: “Matera is your home now….!” 4) The hotel has underground caves that you need to visit. Especially the “broken mirror cave” is a must visit. Other than the caves the hotel is equipped and decorated with historical features that create an incredible atmosphere which at the same time explain about Matera’s history (> 20.000 years…). 5) Breakfast (with fresh, home made and high quality products only…) is served whilst a friendly pianist is providing you daily the most relaxed environment. 6) The “patron” (owner) of the hotel is a humble, but more than friendly and eloquent elder Italian man that is hosting his guests personally every morning and afternoon with friendly talks and sincere interests. “My hotel is only great as I’ve great guests….” (please digest this and think over how this sounds in friendly Italian wording…!).

Very picturesque ancient city! Interesting to explore. All walkable. Many good cafes, restaurants, and stores in town. Good base from which to explore Basilicata and Puglia.
Found eating out in this town and also buying necessities . An example where we live in Italy and it is also a tourist area the Sorrento coast I pay €1.99 for dove shower gel here I was charged €3.15 Not impressed with due torre restaurant over priced and frozen rustici - not a good impression of local food for first night in Basilicata. Area once known as poor mans italy has certainly gone over priced more so than the Isle of Capri living in a sea food area we ate in the port at the lanterna rosso. found it expensive and when went to pay with credit card their machine was not working. owner insisted I went out to get cash and walk off to a cash machine after keeping us there for half an hour and made my husband stay in the restaurant. Obviously lack of customer care and little faith in people who are honest, felt not treated professionally when not the customers problem if the machine not working should be told before eating to make one be more prepared and less embarrassed.... This resort is very expensive a shame - we did find a lovely place in the hills that warrants more business, prices affordable, friendly and lovely owner- a must to eat here great food pizzas wines and local antipasti and wines The Piccolo Ranch, We ate twice here and even had drinks and snacks at the bar up the Cristo Re they do lovely Rustici and open til late at night too - worth a visit, the only bar ristorante here - they also deserve more business as merit it
This is a relatively new national park in the southwestern areas of the Basilicata and part of the northern Calabria regions -- just getting much deserved attention from travelers. Rotonda is the site of a wonderful museum focused on the ecology and natural surroundings of the area. Hiking is great. Driving the "curly" roads worth every hairpin turn; villages to the South and into Calabria interesting for their Albanian heritage. The town is perfect for it's central location and lots of good restaurants -- even off season: we visited in October. Don't miss a pranzo or two at La Bella Rotonda!
Matera is a city that sits atop a large hill and is also a province in the region of Basilicata in Southern Italy. Also known as "la Città Sotterranea" (the Subterranean City), Matera is known for being one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In its historic center, called "Sassi", are ancient structures built into the cliffs and is where Passion of the Christ and other movies have been filmed. It is a one of a kind place that should not be missed. The city is reasonably large and the town center surrounding the Sassi di Matera is picturesque with beautiful buildings, cobblestone streets, restaurants, and shops for all tastes. Stay near the Sassi di Matera for an easy stroll into the old city to explore the many stone streets and stairways connecting the ancient city and its over 200 churches. If you have the time, visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Domenico Ridola a cultural center and museum (Via Domenico Ridola 24) to see relics and reproductions from area excavations going back many centuries. At just €2 to enter, it is one of the best values in town and a great way to spend a couple of hours.
Irsina is a little gem in the middle of yellow fields and green patches on the hills of Basilicata. Wandering among the small streets of the old town and admiring the view from the various balconies is priceless. Although many restaurants were closed we had a great time at "Contessa", a typical Lucan restaurant with a very friendly staff. Don't miss the chance to buy local fruits and vegetables from the groceries stores in town!
This is an incredibly beautiful area and the perfect base to explore much of Basilicata. Spend time in the early evening in the piazza in front of the church. It has the best view and you get to see the life of this town.
Matera is an open air museum packed with layers of history, amazing beauty, and history that is most moving and poignant! The locals clearly love their city and the only way to really appreciate it is to take one of several walking tours, which are well organized and extremely informative!! Local culinary arts and hospitality in general were also top notch, making Matera a must see destination for Basilicata and all of southern Italy!!
Marconia
This is a brand new, impeccably clean apartment. I loved the freshly laundered scent of the towels and bedsheets. Charlotte was responsive and pleasant and this made our arrival and departure effortless. I would definitely recommend her lovely apartment to anyone requiring a stopover between Puglia and Calabria who is looking to experience a bit of Basilicata. We visited both Matera and Craco while staying there and both areas were conveniently located.
Castelmezzano
A beautiful rural escape right in central Basilicata. With lots of short trips to nearby Hilltop towns and hiking possibilities it'sa great base. We had a perfect, although very short stay here: quiet and peaceful. Although this is our fourth visit to Italy we had the very best breakfast ever. Home baking with organic eggs etc. I'll leave it to your imagination until you get to savor!
Castelmezzano
A gem in the wonderful surrioundings of Basilicata mountains. Very close to Castelmezzano which is one of Italy's most beutiful borgo's list. Excellent breakfast with homemade jam and cakes. Convinient parking spot next to the property. New and clean furniture, very well equipped kitchen. And of course, attentive and hospitable hosts made our stay special and pleasant experience.
Pietrapertosa
Pietrapertosa is the highest village in the Basilicata mountains - spectacular, humble, tiny. Marianna was straightforward and helpful, and the apartment was perfect - gorgeous views, and both a sense of history and all modern needs. You could spend hours on the front step in the sun looking out over the valley....
Grottole
The Centro Storico apartment was beautiful, comfortable, and spotless! The kitchen and clothes washer were hugely helpful during our travels. It was a peaceful refuge in the quiet countryside town of Grottole, and a great base to make excursions around Basilicata.
Pietrapertosa
Pietrapertosa is a real hidden germ in the basilicata region. Super authentic. The apartment is almost brand new, very spacious and has a small terrace. It’s very quite and you can park the car in front of the door for a reduced fee. Large fridge. Comfy beds.
Hotel Orazio is easily accessible by car, and well situated near all activities in Venosa. Breakfast was good and staff was attentive. Good place to stay when visiting the north of Basilicata.
So many things!!!! The cave room is spacious and full to f character. Very nice breakfast and the spa is a wonderful experience.
The view, pool, and breakfast selection. The staff was also very polite and helpful.
The customer service, the meals, the facilities, the marina, the beach and swimming pools.
Beautiful swimming pool, good food (breakfast and lunch).
beautiful setting and extremely friendly staff. the pool area is fantastic and the scenery is great. good access to other cities but well outside of the town.
We stayed there for one night on our way from Bari to Sicily. The hotel rooms are placed in a corridor building forming an arc. The pool was really nice, and the water was warm. A lot of outdoor space. There is a football pitch, tennis court, night show for the kids, animators (both kids and adults)… The hotel is about 2 km from the beach, but there is a bus to and from the beach. We had bed and breakfast but opted to pay for the buffet dinner. It was amazing. The pasta was excellent. Breakfast was very nice as well. The staff was very pleasant. Friendly and doing their best to cooperate.
